RESTORATION CARRIED OUT ON THE SANCTUARY SINCE 2013

AT A COST OF £170K

In August 2013 under a new Kirk Session and Board a plan to meet the needs of urgent property repairs began.

At that time, little was known of the extent of work that would need to be undertaken, but under the guidance of the Property Convenor, Ronnie Cheape, it very quickly became apparent that a lot of work and money was needing to be spent on Larbert Old Church to make it fit for the future.

In January 2015 the first signs of dry rot became apparent in two of the South side wooden corbels under the main roof trusses.  With no direct access to these either from above on the roof or below from within the Church, permission then had to be sought from the Presbytery of Falkirk and the General Trustees of the Church of Scotland to proceed.  The dry rot was a priority and the General Trustees granted £10K towards this project.

The cause of the dry rot was put down to faulty lead work, and guttering and the initial work to repair these was undertaken by Matheson Plumbing Co Ltd of Falkirk.  Although we were able to re-use some of the original lead, all of the timber supports were renewed and new lead capping to the stone cope of the parapet was introduced to prevent future water ingress.

The eradication of the dry rot was undertaken by preservation specialists, Richardson & Starling from Perth.  The rot fungus

was much more widespread than anticipated
